Darian Mensah, the quarterback for Duke University, is trending due to his recent decision to enter the transfer portal. This development has garnered significant attention as he reportedly made this move just hours before the closure of the transfer portal window. The timing of his decision likely contributed to the spike in search interest, as many fans and observers were eager to catch up on the latest news before the deadline.

The news was initially reported by various sources, including a breaking update from Yahoo Sports, which highlighted the unexpected nature of Mensah’s decision. Such last-minute moves in college football typically generate heightened interest among fans, players, and programs looking to understand the implications for their team dynamics.

Additionally, the coverage by The Duke Chronicle further fueled inquiries surrounding Mensah’s transfer. The combination of urgency in the news reporting and the importance of the transfer portal in collegiate athletics likely led to the large volume of searches, as individuals sought to understand what this means for both Mensah’s career and the Duke football program.

God if I was 10 years younger and incredibly more athletic than I am now I could’ve made so much money doing this
P

I mean, a 26 year old rapper just signed with Syracuse. If you still have eligibility and get incredibly more athletic, you could make money now.

We’re so far away we can’t even see the plot from here. Have zero problems with the guys getting paid they should have years ago but the current Thunder dome environment fucking blows.

Great decision, if he goes to Miami he might even win the ACC!
T

He will be the first Miami quarterback to have won the ACC!

Well, this confirms the massive Miami offer…
Y

Y’all thought $5 million is wild for a quarterback, Miami figured out that they could just pay *$10 million*, allegedly. You could get a whole solid DL for that, at this market rate
U
uscrash • 38 points
That’s how much LSU’s whole QB room costs!
B
BoogerSugarSovereign • 21 points
Oregon’s probably costs more lol
K

$10M! Do they even have any hospitals left in Miami?

[Kind of the opposite situation at UM](https://ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2021/12/06/miami-reportedly-using-medical-profits-hire-football-coach-which-made-the-internet-properly-irate/81422913007/) — if anything they’ll build more specialist/outpatient facilities lol
S

Kind of insane lol, I wonder how many colleges do this or is it just Miami

I’m trying to figure out how people can’t realize how much more money FSU and Clemson still made than Miami.

Apparently the agent reached out to desperate schools after Leavitt signed. Good agent.

Lmfao. You have to wonder what the fuck Manny Diaz is thinking right now. This is the perfect example of how absurd this whole thing has become. Let’s just get a CBA and have players sign at least 2 year contracts. Enough is enough.
D
dkviper11 • 144 points
I say this as someone who likes Manny Diaz and enjoyed when he was our DC. Manny Diaz was announced as the Temple head coach 12/13/18 and then took the Miami head coaching job on 12/30/18.
E
Expensive_Team_5072 • 20 points
Good point.
S
srs_house • 23 points
And Temple pocketed $4M from Miami for Diaz being employed for 17 days. That was *after* they’d gotten $2.5M from GT when they bought out Geoff Collins. And *that* was because they got poached two years before by Baylor when Matt Rhule got hired away, and he didn’t have a big buyout.

Duke is going to retain Mensah’s NIL rights so there will likely be an amount to recompense them. Unfortunately, the portal is almost closed and Duke is going to have to scramble.

M

Yeah, that’s a douchey move.
N

Maybe we pull a miracle and get a hidden gem. But not looking good at QB for us lol

The players don’t have the incentive to collectively bargain. As it stands they have near-total freedom and little reason to give that up.
S
ScaredEffective • 18 points
The top players like any sport don’t have incentive to bargain. That’s why MLB doesn’t have caps.
T
ttltaway • 7 points
Federal legislation is probably the only way out of this. The schools aren’t going to be locking out the players either.
B
BoldElDavo • 11 points
Don’t confuse a few of the headline players with the vast majority, all of which would be voting members of the union. I mean how many players got “encouraged to leave”? How many entered the transfer portal and no longer have a place on any team? There’s plenty of reason for the players to collectively bargain for things they want.
S
see_bees • 3 points
The fact that 99% of college players have a ceiling of a 5 year career certainly would change things vs the nfl. Someone like Drew Brees or Tom Brady would be part of the NFLPA in the 2006, 2011, and 2020 CBAs. I can’t imagine any college player that was part of multiple CBAs, which would have a major impact on things

R

Players signing contracts clearly doesn’t matter. They will just be bought out
W
Weekly-Beginning4741 • 3 points
A CBA wouldn’t allow that…
N
Namath96 • 2 points
Well he did have a 2 year deal, Miami is just going to buy him out of it. Schools really messed up not getting out ahead of it. As of now the players have no reason to sign a CBA
C
chikfil8 • 2 points
A CBA for a sport that has so many conferences, division levels, and state laws to deal with is realistically not going to happen. There also doesn’t seem to be many complaints from the players right now on the money side of things, so I don’t see much incentive for them to form a union. The only complaints are from fans that want less transferring. And the easiest way to fix that is restore NCAA authority over eligibility, and let them restrict transfers.

It just sucks that the two sports I follow are competing to see which can become unwatchable the fastest. The presumptive MLB lockout is the only interesting thing on the calendar this year.
