As a Phillies fan who grew up in New England and lived in Boston for over a decade, I’m really glad that he went to a team that I love. I really didn’t want to have to root against him. Easily one of my favourite Phillies in recent years. Funny that the two Phillies jerseys I own have “Suarez” and “Victorino” on the back. I’ve already told my die-hard Sox fan to get ready to enjoy an amazing pitcher and character for 80% of the season.

People label the Red Sox as cheap, but they’re not really. They’re just weird. While other teams shrug their shoulders and accept that you have to sign a dumb contract once in a while, Boston in recent years has always tried to pivot to some other less obvious but theoretically more efficient way to spend. The issue is that when you get your evaluations wrong and Masataka Yoshida turns out to be a huge waste of money instead of a savvy deal, you look like an absolute idiot. Whereas nobody would really hold it against you if you wasted that same money on a name-brand guy like Bogaerts or whoever.

The most consistent read I can put together on how the Red Sox operate is that they’re constantly trying to replicate the Nomar trade. Dump a problematic star, take on two sneaky useful guys, take a huge risk, win the World Series. They don’t want to make the obvious move. They want to look *clever*. The problem is that maybe in 2004 we were a tad ahead of the curve on analytics, but nobody really is anymore. So it hasn’t quite worked in a while and they’ve made a lot of apparently dumb decisions recently. But at this point let’s just see where it gets us.

Yeah, Sox are too committed to not “overpaying” to realize that “overpaying” is actually paying market value in some situations. You can’t make these decisions in a vacuum/calculator, you have to go with the guys that are actually on the market. Almost every free agent is an “overpay” if you create a salary-to-WAR conversion rate, but the vast majority of guys aren’t available to you at any given time for various reasons (under contract, haven’t hit FA yet, etc.). Sometimes, if you want the player, you have to spend money. And no one gives a shit how much they make; if they’re good, it’s a good deal, and if they’re bad, even a “team-friendly” deal is awful. It’s like GMs who don’t want to “lose” a trade. If you want to get a great player, you have to be willing to “lose.” Every single prospect the Sox sent for Crochet could become an All-Star and no one would care as long as Crochet is as advertised (and so far he is). Meanwhile, even if James Tibbs sucks, the Dustin May trade is always going to be a “loss” for the Sox just because they got a shitty player.

You’re accurately summarizing the conventional wisdom: sometimes you’re going to have to pay more than what the spreadsheets tell you to do, that’s just what the market dictates. What’s interesting about the Red Sox right now is they seem to be largely rejecting that conventional wisdom. While everybody else compromises their principals every year or two, what if Boston stays the course and NEVER overpays, but instead commits those same resources into undervalued assets? Over time, does this pay off? There aren’t really examples of it working, but that’s mostly because no (rich) franchise has actually been disciplined enough to stick to this plan. Boston does not want to pay market rate because they think they are smarter than the market. That’s a great strategy if they actually are smarter than the market. The issue is that the last two regimes haven’t offered many reasons to believe that’s true.

Yeah, sometimes conventional wisdom is wrong. But I think too often people can hear the words “conventional wisdom” and basically *assume* it’s wrong, because hey look at Galileo and Moneyball and that guy who invented pet rocks. In reality, conventional wisdom is often right! I think a lot of their moves have been good to great, and I like this one. I just worry more about the moves they *haven’t* made, and hope that they don’t become the Pittsburgh Steelers of the MLB, barely making the playoffs every year without ever actually being in contention for a championship, but content to be just slightly above mediocre.

Astros fans are similar, they get mad at Crane for not spending when he really does. We don’t give out big contracts to the stars out there but we do spend cash on Lance McCullers who spontaneously combusts, Cristian Javier having a career year where he wasn’t a full starter, Rafael Montero having his first ever good year, aging first basemen, and trading for a “discounted” Correa when he’s lost a step and our infield was fine as is.

Yoshida isn’t that bad. There’s just nowhere for the Sox to play him. He’d be a productive DH for teams like the Marlins, Pirates. Sox are cheap because they never want to give long term deals to their franchise players and when they do, they deal them. They are one of the big market teams and like the Cubs tend to not spend as much as the Dodgers, Mets despite having the money to do so. You can add the Jays as another team who spends.

Yoshi is a great contact hitter with no power and a terrible outfielder. Even if they had outfield spots open, you don’t want him there. He can play DH, but you usually hope for someone with more power there imo

Cheap means you don’t spend money. If you refuse to spend $30 million on Xander Bogaerts but then turn around and spend it on Ranger Suarez, you aren’t cheap, you just have a different philosophy on how best to turn money into wins. What remains an open question is whether Breslow’s philosophy is actually any good. Sportrac now has the Sox 6th in payroll for the upcoming year (and they will presumably add at least a bit more when they land another infielder.) I won’t argue with anyone who wants John Henry to spend more, but reports of Boston’s payroll demise have been greatly exaggerated. They cut spending when they were bad, and now that they’re good they’re back toward the top of the league. That’s how everybody except the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets operates.

I think this is being exaggerated, for much of last year they were ranked 5-6 in offense, even without Devers and losing Bregman. Offense shit the bed the last 5-6 weeks+ playoffs, but they still were around 10th. They lost Bregman who missed 50 games but his offense was replaced by Contreras. A full season of Anthony, Abreu missed 47 games, and signing, say, Suarez and this is a well above average offense. Casas is the key to it potentially being a great/very good offense, if he’s even 2024 Casas but healthy. If they sign Eugenio they’d be above average at 3rd, short, 1st, catcher, left, right, possibly DH with Masa. They’re far from the 2024 Mariners.
