It was odd that someone so adept at pointing out the internal workings of the corporate autocracy could not extend that to its impact on everyday life.

The trick is that he didn’t. If you look at his statements outside of the comic he apparently just believed that tons of people are stupid. His comic was philosophically less “these things should be changed” and more “The boss is stupid so we just gotta put up with it” and people attributed deeper criticism to it than what was actually present in the text. The final parody created by both perspectives ends up looking generally similar, but one cares about understanding the situation and how it comes about as well as making fun of its outcomes, while the other doesn’t care to engage beyond the level of the basic “Mondays sure do suck, huh”. Looking back at the various jokes and narratives within Dilbert, as well as Scott Adams own statements, it becomes obvious that he didn’t really care much for the actual plight of the employee and instead thought that the reason people liked his comic was because he was making fun of the absurd and the people that had to deal with it. That kind of “point and laugh at the suffering of others” humor is inherently othering and so, unsurprisingly, those that frequently engage in / enjoy that pattern of thought tend to trend conservative over time.

I remember doing Christmas shopping one year, and Dilbert merchandise was everywhere – big dolls, calendars, books, and of course little Dilbert-branded office items. For sure. Dilbert started about the same time I started working as an engineer, and it was hugely popular among us cubicle dwellers. I emailed him in a time when email was brand new, and he wrote back. I know now that he was looking for ideas for his comic, he wasn’t just being friendly.

I think part of how we got here is we like to ignore the shitty things bad people did after they die. We need to bring back the idea that if you use your success to hurt other people, we don’t hide that the world improves when you stop participating. He was a dork who adopted extremely strange racist views, said misogynistic things, and when society pushed back he pulled the “ha ha I was just joking” excuse before repeating what he said *again*. He started incorporating those views into his work, which is when major publications had to stop carrying it. He made his bed. Then he pooped on it. Then he rolled in it and complained, like a child, that someone had made it stinky. If you choose to leave a legacy like that, I think it should taint anything else you did.

It feels like an ego thing. If they dropped the ego and accepted that they could be duped or held a certain lie in high regard they could use the same mind that helped them get through med school to figure out that the evidence does not in any way support the Young Earth lie. This is my sister. I explained to her daughter that some people are literally so smart that it’s like a disability. We had an aunt like that- literal genius, full ride scholarships to both Georgetown and Harvard for political science/international affairs. She knew Bill Clinton and worked under Rev. Jessie Jackson. Her apartment, car, and anything in her house was like…biohazard level filthy. When she died my dad had to put on paper suits and duct tape his pants closed because there were roaches and bedbugs in her house.
