All the new signings are here for the ride, including Woltemade. Sorry Elanga is beyond awful

Hall is amazing but I’m worried he’s playing so many minutes and he’s not that long coming back from injury. Needs rest but we have no cover. Truly fucked if something happens to him
P

Wish we had a striker who could just bury a chance when it comes
S

Last three games we have lost a player to injury in vital positions I wonder if the board backs Eddie with reinforcements or just recalls Taggart Unfortunately I think I already know the answer
B
brynleyt • 2 points
It’s not a question of the board. Upper management have given every penny they can. It’s PSR, don’t turn it into something it isn’t

Elanga was dogshit today like

The lad has just come back into the squad and wasn’t given much of a chance. He had a couple of nice touches, and a few dodgy touches, please get off his back.
A
Admirable_Phallus • 3 points
Im going to disagree with that, he was poor. He has shown nothing but this level, his touches were awful this game. He wasn’t the reason we lost, I dont blame him personally. But we are now in a situation where the club may not make a signing because of PSR. If we hadnt signed him we could be sorting out our defensive line, so far he has added nothing to the side

Ashamed-Sprinkles-76 • 3 points
I get that the group position (on Reddit) is to slate the lad, and therefore there is no objective analysis, and his poor moments are remembered. He is going to be rusty, so I can forgive his effort today, he did have some nice touches – whether you want to remember them or not. He has been poor this season, but there are a lot of factors, some of which you will have no idea about. He is the player I thought he was, and he absolutely can be of some use to this team, we need to get him in form. He isn’t going to be world-class, but in form he can get in behind and is a decent finisher.

I think though its not about the player, its about the signing. We spent £55m on a PL proven talent that just doesnt appear to fit our team. It looks like our scouting team just looked up who has the most goals and assists in the league last season and then signed him and Wissa. He made some alright touches but he gave away the ball a number of times and didn’t make a great impact. I get he might be rusty but that doesn’t absolve the concept of him (as a signing) of criticism.
A
Ashamed-Sprinkles-76 • 2 points
Criticism is fine, however, dogpiling – as goes on, is not fine. I have seen people saying crap about his effort – which is ridiculous. He did not choose the transfer fee, and maybe Nottingham Forest have done very well out of us with all the recent transfers, but writing-off the lad off half a season is still premature. We haven’t seen him on form, but we also haven’t seen Gordon on form this season. Nor Murphy really. We haven’t seen quite a few of the others on form. Realistically, if one of Elanga, Murphy, Gordon, Wissa picks-up some form, we will start turning some of the poorer results into wins. I will stand on this, stats wise, we are similar to previous seasons. I reckon one game, all the goals will go in, and we’ll smash someone by 4 or 5, and everyone here will be like “where did that come from???”.
A
Admirable_Phallus • 1 points
I know he didn’t chose the transfer fee (and I sympathise with where you are coming from). I for one, am not annoyed at the player, I am annoyed at the club for spunking £55m on him. I also understand what you mean about writing him off early… but he has actually been dreadful. Osula has been a better RW than him. Agree that if players pick up some form we will turn in some wins, thats not exactly a controversial statement. Our entire front line has been out of form this season (other than Barnes). My gripe is fully with the signing not the player. We havent seen a £55m player show any real form since he signed. Semenyo has done more for Man City in two games than Elanga has done for us all season. You have to be able to judge players, and half a season of woeful performances has to be called out
A
Ashamed-Sprinkles-76 • 1 points
Ok, my fair challenge though, who was available that would have fit in our wage structure and wanted to come to us? We were considering spending like £65mil on Strand Larsen at the time lol lol lol… Thank god we didn’t do that. When Elanga started, first few games, people were actively saying he was so much better than Murphy… Then they realised… Murphy was injured at the start of the season and we didn’t have many options, so I think even as a healthy body, he was and is better than the other options we had. Appreciate that it’s way more than we would ideally like to spend on a RW that hasn’t contributed the goals or assists we would expect… I can’t compare him with signings for Man City – 115 or whatever charges… Who have signed world class players for <£50mil (somehow) again and again… Hmmm… However… hindsight is 20/20, and I do think he can be useful for us. I fully agree, he will not prove to be a shrewd market investment, but I am not willing to write him off just yet, and even if I did, I wouldn’t put it online in a public space. On the million to one chance an active player sees it, I don’t want to go too hard on them. Fully back anybody in black and white.

Admirable_Phallus • 2 points
Very fair challenge. I guess the obvious would be Semenyo (I know hes a LW but clearly plays on both). Its tricky to look back on the market but I 100% think there were better signings that Elanga on the market for £52m. Just in the PL we could have gone for Madueke and Kudus. Cherki looked to be available at a point and there are other wingers who are performing. I fully respect your opinion, and not slating people on the off-chance they see it – I dont want whatever I say to be seen by a player or upset them – I possibly get caught up in the tribalism a bit. I do see the subreddit as a space to discuss opinions with fellow fans, and to do that we need to be able to be critical of the clubs signings and player performances. I do however hate how the fanbase single X player out after a game as a reason for us losing. Ramsey starts and we lose “if only Joelinton was starting” and then we lose with Joelinton and the same person is saying “hes past it” lol
A
Ashamed-Sprinkles-76 • 1 points
I agree with you, however I don’t see how we could sign any of those players. I would expect that Spurs would pay higher wages for Kudus (c.£150k per week, compared with c.£100k for Elanga) and I am sure I read (although may be making it up) Kudus’ attitude is problematic, whereas Elanga seems like a good professional (don’t get me wrong, Kudus is a substantially better player). Likewise, we wouldn’t be able to compete against Man City or Arsenal – unfortunately – for both wages and stature. I love Eddie, but nobody is picking him over Pep ahaha. Semenyo would have been a great purchase, unbelievable and transformative for this side… but clearly our scouts don’t have a crystal ball. Also, I note Bournemouth fans (on Reddit) were criticising him before he left for being a selfish player, so we’ll see how that goes. I am going to advocate for Dolan, as a RW I know, and who I love – from Espanyol, but mostly for his story, which has been in the news recently. What an unbelievable young man. I follow Espanyol’s results purely because of him. I reckon someone will try and sign their striker at some point. He is wasteful as fuck.

Fuck sake man we had to concede that 2nd, 1-0 would’ve been good considering how shite we where.

Were we shit? Not clinical enough in front of goal but lads played well overall imo.

Far too easy to play against, I know its city but even still our defending is pure embarrassing.

Would [insert PL RW] be a good signing, they are better than Elanga

I think Steve Bruce would be more effective on the right wing than Elanga tonight…. I really hope something clicks for him and we can use his pace for good

If we can do it at the emirates, we can do it at the other airline! 4-2 Newcastle
J

Are we still playing same tactics to when we had Isak? Because Woltemade and Wissa are not like him in the skill department (they have their own) and it’s like we are trying to make them play like Isak if you know what I mean?
H
Historical_Gur_4620 • 1 points
Sutton on Woltemade’s physicality comments left me somewhat bemused.

Was at the game so don’t know what Sutton’s been yapping about, but it was dismal from Nick tonight. League Two performance and he was bullied

Thought we played quite well there, created more than enough presentable chances but one of our strikers can’t shoot and the other one won’t. Not expecting us to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the 2nd leg but people saying just play the reserves need to pipe down.

Elanga, the substitute, deserved to be subbed. Flog him to Saudi

Pep is a fraud. He just throws his cheque book at problems and they are solved. Having said that I would rather want them to win the league than Arsenal

Smart move subbing Ait Nouri on for Ake at LB as soon as we brought on Trippier though.

I don’t dislike Elanga because he’s shit I dislike him because he’s shit and he doesn’t try.
G
grape_idea • 6 points
Why would he not try? Not saying he is performing well but it’s just ridiculous to say a professional footballer doesn’t try
A
Ashamed-Sprinkles-76 • 8 points
What are you on? Where do you see him not trying? What a crazy and blatantly untrue statement. His end product has been disappointing, but anybody who watched him knew that already before he signed.
A
Admirable_Phallus • 8 points
Thought we played well. Hall was immense, Bruno, Joelinton and Barnes looked decent. Elanga, Wissa and Wolt were really poor. Pope is such an enigma, he saves more goals but creates more chances for the opposition. I would rather we just play the b team and leave the cup alone
E

get a good keeper Howe ffs please

Trafford looked every bit a keeper we wanted to buy tonight. Sadge.

And we made an offer. Then City made a better one. Then they got a better keeper and screwed both of us over.

Good thing they won’t acquire anyone to help them out this month then
S

Can’t blame the keeper for that tonight. Summer attacking signings aren’t good enough. It’s not an attack on the players, effort was there. Just not at the level we want to reach.

yeah nonsense, no idea where they come up with that
S

We can’t compete with the top teams without a clinical striker. In games like this, against your Citys and Arsenals, you simply can’t afford to squander chances the way we have tonight. It’s why we were successful last year with Isak. Unfortunately, he’s been replaced by two strikers, one young and still developing, and the other… well, someone who just doesn’t seem to have his head screwed on yet.
N
norcimo • 2 points
This. We have bigger issues come summer (keeper, defense, CDM, acm) but we don’t have a striker a feel confident will score a chance, which is very worrying. Hoping Wissa sorts himself with game time
S
stanley_ipkiss2112 • 1 points
Oh I agree, all I’m saying is either it’s going to be a work in progress this season, with the hope that either Wissa or Woltemade become more clinical, or it’s a case that they’ll mould into that next.

We’ll just have to win the FA Cup and the Champions League instead
