That’s the thing about a final final final test, everybody thinks there’ll be a final final final final test

Player power at Madrid is bigger than ever, but player quality is not. Not by a long shot. All you need to know about our sad state of reality.

> Player power at Madrid is bigger than ever, but player quality is not. Not by a long shot. A couple of years with no Champions League wins and that player power will fade. Especially when these players keep downing tools, they will struggle to win anything again

>Player power at Madrid is bigger than ever, but player quality is not. Not by a long shot. Exactly. This squad isn’t even half the quality of that 3peat squad

I’ve seen this repeated time and time again. The problem is a Kroos sized problem, “we cannot replace him, we cannot”, such a player leaving will have the same impact that CR7 had leaving the club. Fitness is absolutely another issue, players can’t stay fit. Some losses to Barça, kudos to them (Copa del Rey final, Rudiger couldn’t sprint back whilst the score was 1-2 with 10 mins to go) would have been avoidable had a full strength defence was in place. In 2024, the team wasn’t a juggernaut by all means, but players were healthy enough and Kroos was there. The board should have answered those issues *before* they splashed on Kylian…but it is what it is.

> The problem is a Kroos sized problem, “we cannot replace him, we cannot”, such a player leaving will have the same impact that CR7 had leaving the club. But they didnt even try replacing him, there’s no playmaking midfielder in the team. That’s what pisses me off. Where the fuck is tempo holder and playmaker? Certainly not anywhere in this club.
R
Reach_Reclaimer • 1 points
Well in theory you have Trent to be the tempo dictator as he did with us, but he’s been injured
N

I’ve always wondered why Real didn’t go for someone like Ruben Neves. I think he would’ve thrived in that role at Real.
J
jedifolklore • 8 points
Genuinely, because the board were arrogant enough that they didn’t believe: 1. Kroos was gonna retire, probably thought he was pulling a Luka, so they were caught by surprise. 2. They love the shiny stuff, the offensive side of the game, hence Kylian, for them a Tchouaméni was enough to replace Case, Rudiger was good to replace Varane (who left two seasons prior) but they didn’t think about *any* Kroos replacement and even Xubimendi, the club did not pursue him with true intent.

They really should’ve bought Harry Kane in 2023 instead.
O
Other_Beat8859 • 33 points
Had they gotten Kane they would be in such a better position. I don’t think Vini would decline as much if he was still the main man on the left wing and Kane is a great leader who doesn’t have an ego like that of Mbappe. You could also use the money from Mbappe’s massive salary and signing bonus to sign midfielders and centre backs. Real Madrid would be in such a better position if they just never went for Mbappe.
W
wuti69 • 10 points
It’s not like money is an issue at Madrid. Had they gone for Harry Kane, there’s no guarantee they still get reinforcements in the midfield (and get another world class LW instead).
A
Acceptable_Ad_6278 • 10 points
it would also reiterate that the opportunity to go to Madrid doesn’t come twice when Mbappe chose to renew in 2022.

It’s about selling jerseys for Perez and nothing else.

Anybody can accept Ronaldo partying every day when he didn’t even knew vs who they were playing but making goals like a machine. But these players are not Ronaldo, and surely they think they are better than they actually are, this is a wannabe galácticos.
S
san771 • 96 points
They wish they were half as good as a hungover Ronaldo.
T
TheAmazingKoki • 16 points
If La Liga paid clubs more equally they would be in United’s situation in a few years time. The league is just too unequal for clubs really to be punished for bad management. Same for Barcelona in the last decade, they shouldn’t be leading the table after 10 years of self sabotage.
S
SomewhereExisting121 • 24 points
Barca lead the league because their low cost signings and youth players have been as insanely good. Without Pedri Yamal Cubarsi Balde Fermin and half the rest of the squad being this good and mostly free we would be sunk. Sure tv revenues go to Barca’s pockets and then immediately back to paying off loans or building stadium etc.

Watch Arbeloa and this squad pull some voodoo shit like y’all always do in the Champions League and win it this season
E

Let’s see if this is really a problem or if Xabi is mismatch and is more of a Pep style of coach. Maybe bringing good vůbec back will be enough. The quality is there. The attitude might change if they go 2 years without trophy and will break negative records. Mbappe for sure wants UCL.
S
san771 • 45 points
Carlo also had issues with this squad, and he’s as far of a “pep style” coach as they come
D
Dirtysocks1 • -11 points
Every coach has problems with squad. Even Pep is unhappy sometimes and he gets what he wants.
S
san771 • 10 points
When I say issues I mean he wasn’t getting results out of them
R
RepresentativeBox881 • 89 points
I agree with the point about not having a balanced team with all 3 of Mbappe, Vini and Jude. Even Carlo couldn’t make that work last season.
L
lockituup • 45 points
Jude got all high and mighty after his great first season that he thinks he’s above pressing. I don’t recall him being this way at Dortmund nor during his first season. I love Jude and he’s a great player but his ego has gotten to his head
T
Time_Entertainer_319 • 21 points
Jude actually pressed a lot. I think he stopped when Mbappe and Vini weren’t pressing. Pressing only works if everyone does it. 1 person cannot press. It has to be everyone.
P
paulinHIRO • 9 points
Yeah and Vini stopped because of the turtle. I agree with you and sure, no one will argue that Vini has a big ego, but he has more rep in Madrid than Kylian (at least should, considering he actually won RM titles), all of a sudden there is a dude that did nothing for the club and he gets to not track back, not press and just reap the goods scoring and taking PKs. Honestly I’d be slightly upset as well but they are football players, the corresponding reaction is this crazy domino effect and thinking to be bigger than the club

He worked hard at Dortmund but you could already see his massive ego there.

This makes my blood boil. Let the fuckers live a symphony of whistles until the end of the season. Maybe that will wake them up.
S
Sometimes-funny • 180 points
Bro, footballers live in a different reality these days. All they have ever heard is how wonderful they are, game’s gone
B
Benzia • 81 points
Getting whistled for 90 minutes every other week, it will do them good. It’s proven very effective, even with the biggest egos. Bring back to earth those fuckers who think they are bigger than the club.
P
pablothewizard • 8 points
They do, but I feel like it’s quite rare for top athletes to be discontented with discipline and standards. You wouldn’t see this kind of behaviour from Klopp’s Liverpool or Pep’s Manchester City. At least, not collectively anyway. Sometimes there might be one or two disruptive egos that a manager deals with but this feels like quite an extreme situation. There are few clubs in world football, I think, where the players are going to be dismissive of Xabi fucking Alonso.
G
grip0matic • 70 points
I don’t think the tourists in el bernabeu are gonna whistle to anybody.

> Another key moment was the match against Athletic on Wednesday, December 3. Some players expressed their dissatisfaction with the trip to Bilbao taking place the day before the match, rather than on the day itself. Alonso mediated by promising two days off in the event of a victory. Madrid won 3-0 at San Mames, putting in a highly convincing performance. But a shambolic 2-0 home defeat against Celta followed on the Sunday. The Bernabeu booed the team loudly, something that has rarely happened. The decision to give the players time off in the build-up was criticised — both inside and outside the club. In the eyes of Madrid’s leadership, the situation was now extremely worrying. True diva behavior
T
thecashblaster • 52 points
I’m sorry but wtf are they doing the day before a match that they can’t travel? It’s literally their job. I’ve flown in on Sunday for Monday morning meetings and I get paid like .001% of what they get paid.
