The recent resignation of Mike Tomlin as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers after 19 seasons has sparked significant interest in Bill Cowher, who previously held the position from 1992 to 2006. As a highly respected figure in Steelers history, Cowher’s legacy and coaching strategies are likely being revisited, leading to a surge in search interest as fans and analysts alike seek information regarding his potential return or insights on the team’s future direction.

Additionally, Bill Cowher’s participation in recent discussions, such as his appearance on FOX Sports Radio, has reinvigorated public curiosity about his thoughts on the current state of the NFL and coaching changes. His insights could provide valuable perspectives for Steelers fans and the broader football community, especially in light of a major leadership change within the organization.

The combination of a high-profile coaching resignation and Cowher’s ongoing relevance in conversations around NFL coaching strategies has contributed to the increase in search volume for information related to him. This moment has created an opportunity for fans to reflect on Cowher’s influence on the team and the league, resulting in heightened interest in his public statements and potential future involvement with the Steelers.

I’m 24, watched Cowher for a season when my dad got custody when I was 5. It’s been Tomlin for the rest of my 19 years watching

I’m also 34… I’m sad. We’ll find another coach but this is a reality check of getting older for me it seems.

I’m in my 40s and the Steelers have only gone through the Head Coach hiring process twice in my lifetime (this makes the 3rd). Noll was already the coach when I was born.

As a 42 year old I’ve only known Cowher and Tomlin… Noll ended his career a few years before I became a fan

It’s like a pope or a king dying. It happens so rarely.
A
Ancient_Swimming58 • 159 points
I think theres actually been more pope deaths. But I’m not gonna fact check it
C
ContinuumGuy • 172 points
Pulled it up. Chuck Noll was named Steelers HC on Jan. 27, 1969. Popes since then: Paul VI (until ’78) John Paul I (briefly in 78) John Paul II (78-2005) Benedict (2007-2013)- left due to abdication, not death. Francis (2013-2025) Leo (2025-now)- is alive So there have been more Popes (6) and Papal transitions (5) but once the Steelers hire someone they will have only tied the number of Papal deaths in office.

> John Paul III (78-2005) *John Paul II*

Trying to figure out how a pope served for 1,927 years! (It’s the Catholic Church. 78 AD is relevant to their timeline!)

George Ringo I

When you consider the fact that the pope is generally ~70 you would expect a fairly regular turnover. I would imagine John Paul III holding the seat for 28 years is probably a bit of an anomaly historically. Edit: John Paul II – not III

I’m going crazy in here, it was JP2 not 3. There hasn’t been a John Paul the 3rd
H
Healthy_Profit_9701 • 9 points
Can you imagine how long John Paul IV will reign?
F
Fezrock • 10 points
JP2 had the third longest tenure of all popes (and that’s taking as true that St Peter was pope for 34 years; otherwise JP2 had the second longest). The average pope tenure has been 7.5 years; though that includes a bunch of early popes that were martyred and a bunch of medieval popes that were assassinated.
C
ContinuumGuy • 5 points
Yeah, JP3 + the general lengthening of human lifespans due to medicine have definitely upped the average.
C
CecilFieldersChoice2 • 10 points
They should have to take a new name. Coach Yinzer IV
K
kkngs • 10 points
We are on our 3rd pope since Tomlin joined the Steelers. Pope John Paul died right before Tomlin was hired and he had been pope since well before Cowhers’ had the job.
P
problematic_glasses • 3 points
there have been 6(!) popes since 1969
Q
Quasimdo • 970 points
Who’s their next HOF coach gonna be?
B
Blze001 • 628 points
Probably someone no one has really heard of outside fans of that specific team
V
Vitosi4ek • 432 points
Pre-Steelers experience for our recent HCs: Tomlin – DB coach in Tampa for 5 years, DC for the Vikings for one year Cowher – DBs coach for the Browns for two years, DC for the Chiefs for 3 years Noll – DC for the Chargers and Colts for 3 years each.

Hate to say it but Kubiak would fit this pattern best.
S
sonfoa • 143 points
Kubiak is an offensive guy, though. All the previous guys had a defensive background.
S
skeetszn2 • 209 points
After watching our offense since Ben retired, I am totally on board with an offensive coach lol
C
Cmp_ • 39 points
Is it asking too much for an offense from this century?
S
Schaftenheimen • 4 points
Can I interest you in a slightly used Shane Waldron? His offense from is from this century. It’s not a good offense, by any means, but it’s from this century.
S
Steelers711 • 59 points
I think it’s time for an offensive minded head coach, both with the evolution of the sport but also to as a change of pace, I feel like it’s easier to find a good DC than OC though that may be completely wrong
H
heroinsteve • 12 points
I don’t think it’s easier to find a great one, but it’s far easier to retain one. You lose your great OC after a great year and you have ups and downs like the Eagles. DCs don’t get poached as often.
T
Takemyfishplease • 11 points
Yeah it feels like good Once move around more and are harder to keep in that position. Lock down a HC with an offensive mindset and worry about a DC
