Ricky Gervais is currently trending with over 50,000 searches primarily due to his absence from the recently held Golden Globe Awards. This absence has sparked notable conversations and speculation around his relationship with the event and its celebrities, such as a highlighted incident involving Jennifer Lopez. A report from VICE mentioned an alleged threatening interaction between Lopez and Gervais, which further fueled public interest and curiosity about his role in the event.

Additionally, the coverage from The Mary Sue expressed gratitude towards Gervais for not attending the awards ceremony, indicating that his stance or potential criticisms of the event attracted media attention. This juxtaposition of reactions to his absence has likely led individuals to seek more information about Gervais, his career, and his views on award shows, contributing to the spike in search interest.

Moreover, the combination of these factors, particularly the sensational nature of reported interactions regarding Gervais and Lopez, and the contrasting sentiments from various media outlets, has created a compelling narrative. This narrative draws audiences who are interested in celebrity dynamics, making it a trending topic.

And Ricky is a full-blown embarrassment
M
myredserenity • 761 points
I AM embarrassed, because I loved him 20 years ago. I can’t understand how he became such an idiot. Did he change, or have I?
T
tirename • 693 points
He did change. Listen to this clip from XFM where he makes fun of Karl Pilkington for not understanding the difference between transvestites and trans sexuals etc. Today he is playing dumb/transphobic to attract an big audience of stupid simple people. He might not play dumb though, but actually just be it. [https://youtu.be/qnMFbZCbrvU?si=TB5lDQ1IwyFlFTfO](https://youtu.be/qnMFbZCbrvU?si=TB5lDQ1IwyFlFTfO)

Nah he’s always punched down.
U
uskgl455 • 131 points
Agree. And I always thought his insistence on political correctness during the XFM shows was mocking.
F
fishin_for_a_bigun • 130 points
That entire tv show with Karl Pilkington (his radio producer) was just him punching down and being condescending to him. He has become out of touch with the real world
U
uskgl455 • 8 points
He’s out of touch now because everyone moves away from him. He’s cringing and self-aggrandizing around people he likes, and he bullies people who like him.
I
IShallWearMidnight • 96 points
It’s both. He’s always loved punching down and trans people are a popular punching target nowadays.
M
MortifiedChivalry • 6 points
Yeah he’s always been clear that he doesn’t give a shit about other peoples’ problems so it’s not really surprising. Just another out of touch rich guy, ho hum.
D
Due-Pineapple-2 • 10 points
He always did the racist ‘ironically’ thing but the problem when you do things ironically all the time is that it somehow becomes part of who you are. He’s even become his David Brent character when it comes to his humble bragging. Also he got addicted to twitter because he searches his name there all the time. And from there it probably rotted his brain. I think one of the turning points was when someone called him a boomer and I think it really got to him and like JK Rowling and Graham Lineham he’s seen some big divided line where life is about owning the libs

From his special *Mortality*: “And often, the people trying to cancel me have been other comedians, writing for the posh papers, doing that thing… They always say, “He’s punching down.” “Comedy should punch up. We only punch up. We punch up.” Their idea of punching up, they have a go at Boris Johnson. How the fuck is that punching up? You know? [laughter] The cunt is learning disabled. He’s like… [laughter] …this fucking waterlogged Gary Busey, fucking albino-egg-man thing. He can’t string a sentence together. Have you heard him talk? He’s like… [mumbles incoherently] He’s a fucking moron, right? [laughter] I… No, I punch up. I have a go at people like, I don’t know, Stephen Hawking, right? Yes, the greatest brain that’s ever lived. You can have a… He can take it. And he wouldn’t even have minded when he was alive, ’cause he’s… He’s part robot, isn’t he? I think… He’s basically a talking chair, so you can say… [laughter] …what you want, but… And he was on Epstein’s island, apparently, so fuck him. I don’t… [laughter] What was he doing there? Why did he want… “I wanna go…” “Why?” “Why do you…” “Why?” [laughter] He’s just there, doing fuck… I would go, “What?” [scoffs] I know pedos who’d kill for a ticket to that. [laughter] And he’s just taking up a space. It’s probably DEI or something, and they go, “We… we need one.” Like… I would go, “What are you doing here, Steve?” He’d go, “I’m thinking weird shit.” Fuck off. [laughter] That… that is probably a hate crime. That is, isn’t it? [laughter] It’s a big buzzword at the moment, “hate crime.” Whatever happens, someone always goes, “Was it a hate crime?” “Why?” “Makes it so much worse.” Does it? Why? If I was walking home tonight, and someone randomly jumped me, beat me up, mugged me, stabbed me, threw acid in my face, I wake up in intensive care… Beep, beep, beep. I open my eyes through the bandages. There’s a policeman. He goes, “Mr. Gervais?” I go, “Yeah.” He goes, “We just wanna let you know, it wasn’t a hate crime.” I go, “Oh, thank God for that.” [laughter] Pretty hateful, innit? Right? Like… But no, a hate crime is something that’s based on your race, disability, sexuality. So a guy with a gun, he wants to kill someone at random. He sees a crowd. He goes, “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.” Bang. Kills someone dead. He goes to court. The judge goes, “Why did you kill that person?” He goes, “No reason.” The judge goes, “So you’re not a bigot?” He goes, “Oh no.” Judge goes, “Aw.” [laughter] “Ten years.” Some other guy’s got a gun. He goes, “I fucking hate dwarves.” All right? [laughter] He sees a little dwarf. He takes aim. Bang. Kills the dwarf dead. Right? He goes to court. The judge goes, “Why did you kill that dwarf?” He goes, “‘Cause I hate the little cunts.” All right? [laughter] Judge goes, “You’re a bigot. Twenty years.” Now, he shouldn’t get more for shooting a dwarf. If anything, it’s a harder shot, innit?” **way to completely miss the point across the board**

And if you do listen to them, you’ll realize that for his last several specials he’s just been using things Karl or Steve said as jokes. Guys a hack and hasn’t done anything good in nearly 2 decades. Even life’s too short was filled with bits done in his other work. Now his stand up is filled with plagiarised jokes and made up Twitter arguments because he’s so out of touch with actual life and has nothing to draw on. It’s funny now when you listen back and realize ricky was the stupid one out the three. He just sounds clever when you’re 15 because he can reel off a few philosophical quotes – but he misunderstands so many basic things and tries to use big words he can’t pronounce.

Kotanan • 8 points
I mean he’s showing himself there, taking the piss out of Karl while not knowing himself. Those podcasts stood out because Karl was frequently the smartest one in the group and Ricky was almost always the dumbest. Here he mocks Karl for not knowing trans terminology but it’s clear from his questioning he doesn’t understand any better himself. In any case he’s clearly not accepting of trans people he just enjoys feeling superior because Kark doesn’t have an extensive vocabulary.
J
jaw-jar • 7 points
I always think about that! I used to listen to that show constantly and was sure I remembered him saying that basically trans women are women etc. What changed his mind? How did he seem to understand trans people more in like 2002 or something but not now?

Shit loads of people acting like After Life was some philosophical piece of genius and buckling over whenever he said ‘cunt’ gave him what seems like a god complex. Ironic. He owes his entire success to Stephen Merchant, who he never ever talks about anymore. Guy is a weapons grade bellend.
S
Square_Conclusion649 • 50 points
After life is hot dog shit, watch one episode and you’ve watched every single episode; Something really bad happened, walk around being a dick to everyone, slight glimmer of hope, dogs are great. That’s the whole show.
B
barnfodder • 14 points
Don’t forget “argument with a moron which Ricky wins using 14 year old edgelord talking points because he’s writing both halves of the conversation”
N
Nknk- • 12 points
Did the two of them have a falling out or something? Have listened to one or two of the old XFM episodes and just assumed they were still mates.
L
lambdaburst • 12 points
Nothing public, but Gervais now rewrites history to exclude Merchant – to the point of never mentioning his name – whenever he talks about his success in interviews. Merchant still full credits Gervais.
S

There’s a clip from After Life that goes around every now and then, the whole thing about going around raping and killing all he wants without god, and it’s just a worse recycled version of an old Penn Jillette clip.
C
ConnaitLesRisques • 3 points
He owes his entire success to Bowie. He’s nothing without Bowie.

Judging from all the behind the scenes stuff he has been in over the years, he has always been a bully, and a total wanker. The thing is, he used to actually be pretty funny, so it was very easy to dismiss him being a total fuckhead as him just playing the part. I think this just emboldened him to show his true colours, which is when people realised that he isn’t just some lovable idiot who is just joking around, he actually is the insufferable wanker that he was projecting this entire time
H
horoyokai • 57 points
He’s always been the same and it was just pretty obvious he was massive dick. It’s just now he’s picking on people you like instead of fat people or religious people
L

It has been out in the open too. I was listening to Karl describe a meeting with Ricky on either XFM or one of the Ricky Gervais podcasts recently. Ricky wrestled him to the ground while Karl tried to play dead so he’d leave him alone, but it didn’t work, and Ricky just lay on top of him. It was still funny the way Karl tells it, because he’s got a gift for comedy, but it’s not exactly normal behaviour between colleagues (or adults even if they are friends, regardless of what Ricky says about it just being bants with mates). What was telling was that Karl ended up thinking about quitting after that while he was walking home, because he didn’t want to have to put up with that shit, and it was his girlfriend that Susanne convinced him to keep going because they needed a new kitchen.

I tried to watch his new special and was so fucking disappointed that he’s parroting the lame ass idea that comedians should be able to say whatever they want without consequences because they’re the last true artists of free speech. So fucking boring to adopt the weakest take and act like he’s so brave for going against “woke”. He’s not a champion of free speech and that new special is boring as shit.
I
inthemagazines • 47 points
You can tell he doesn’t agree with his own nonsense because he gleefully says “r-tard” and “sp-stic” in a routine about censorship, yet then self censors a few seconds later by saying “the N word”.
L
lottiebadottie • 42 points
Unfortunately, disabled people are usually seen as the easiest punching bags.
V

Using your Netflix special to complain about free speech is a level of irony I don’t think Ricky gervais is capable of comprehending any more
I
inthemagazines • 8 points
You can’t say what you want these days, except when Netflix pay you $20m to say whatever you want on the biggest streaming service on the planet.
N
No-Relationship-2637 • 4 points
lol this is so true! I can’t believe his arrogance used to be funny to me. Did you see the special? The fucking arrogance of speaking on behalf of “working people” at the end to tell them they can laugh at slurs because it’s basically all they have to look forward to in life. I was shocked people cheered.

I am with you. His stand up used to be funny, right? Right?! Im not crazy, right?

Acceptable_Leg_7998 • 102 points
A trend I’ve noticed is that the comedy figures who “used to actually be funny” before betraying their fanbase by coming out as bigots were always AT LEAST misogynistic. Bill Burr and Dave Chapelle come to mind. Their fans just didn’t notice because it’s so normalized, or apologized for it, swept it under the rug, argued it was just an ironic facet of their persona, or dismissed it as “just a joke”.
M
myredserenity • 28 points
See I disliked both Bill and Dave because of exactly that. Ricky defended gay people, attacked religious bigotry, spoke fondly of his wife… But maybe I should have been more offended by his mockery of overweight people. I wouldn’t find it funny now.
Q
QCisCake • 12 points
This is why I’ll stick with Steve Hofstetter and Christopher Titus. They’ve been rock solid for decades in their beliefs and sets.
N

they seem to either get too rich to be relatable anymore or too old to understand the times have changed and are too lazy to update their acts with it.
R

I’ve watched many of his stand up specials over the years. Even in my dumb, edgelord teen phase, Ricky Gervais’ standup was never good. People are right to say that the only people making him funny are his co-writers, because his stand up has always been awful.

Homelessavacadotoast • 39 points
20 years ago we were still angry about 9/11 but thinking Victory Accomplished. Christians were marching on the streets opposing the “evils” of gay marriage. Facebook was limited to a college email address, smart phones were still science fiction, and blackberries were new tech. In 2005 the novelty of WiFi hasn’t worn off yet. Donald Trump was a weirdo from Home Alone 2, and nobody got this new Colbert guy…. 20 years ago was a very different world.

He used to have this whole bit on how ridiculous it was to think being gay was a choice. But this same idiot now can’t get past people being non binary or changing gender. It’s not fucking hard. I can’t understand how it’s the same person, other than he’s doing it for money now, and he did it for money then.
