Why Is ricky gervais Trending Today?

Yeah he’s always been clear that he doesn’t give a shit about other peoples’ problems so it’s not really surprising. Just another out of touch rich guy, ho hum.

He always did the racist ‘ironically’ thing but the problem when you do things ironically all the time is that it somehow becomes part of who you are. He’s even become his David Brent character when it comes to his humble bragging. Also he got addicted to twitter because he searches his name there all the time. And from there it probably rotted his brain. I think one of the turning points was when someone called him a boomer and I think it really got to him and like JK Rowling and Graham Lineham he’s seen some big divided line where life is about owning the libs

And if you do listen to them, you’ll realize that for his last several specials he’s just been using things Karl or Steve said as jokes. Guys a hack and hasn’t done anything good in nearly 2 decades. Even life’s too short was filled with bits done in his other work. Now his stand up is filled with plagiarised jokes and made up Twitter arguments because he’s so out of touch with actual life and has nothing to draw on. It’s funny now when you listen back and realize ricky was the stupid one out the three. He just sounds clever when you’re 15 because he can reel off a few philosophical quotes – but he misunderstands so many basic things and tries to use big words he can’t pronounce.

I mean he’s showing himself there, taking the piss out of Karl while not knowing himself. Those podcasts stood out because Karl was frequently the smartest one in the group and Ricky was almost always the dumbest. Here he mocks Karl for not knowing trans terminology but it’s clear from his questioning he doesn’t understand any better himself. In any case he’s clearly not accepting of trans people he just enjoys feeling superior because Kark doesn’t have an extensive vocabulary.

I always think about that! I used to listen to that show constantly and was sure I remembered him saying that basically trans women are women etc. What changed his mind? How did he seem to understand trans people more in like 2002 or something but not now?

Shit loads of people acting like After Life was some philosophical piece of genius and buckling over whenever he said ‘cunt’ gave him what seems like a god complex. Ironic. He owes his entire success to Stephen Merchant, who he never ever talks about anymore. Guy is a weapons grade bellend.

After life is hot dog shit, watch one episode and you’ve watched every single episode; Something really bad happened, walk around being a dick to everyone, slight glimmer of hope, dogs are great. That’s the whole show.

Did the two of them have a falling out or something? Have listened to one or two of the old XFM episodes and just assumed they were still mates.

Nothing public, but Gervais now rewrites history to exclude Merchant – to the point of never mentioning his name – whenever he talks about his success in interviews. Merchant still full credits Gervais.

There’s a clip from After Life that goes around every now and then, the whole thing about going around raping and killing all he wants without god, and it’s just a worse recycled version of an old Penn Jillette clip.

He owes his entire success to Bowie. He’s nothing without Bowie.

Judging from all the behind the scenes stuff he has been in over the years, he has always been a bully, and a total wanker. The thing is, he used to actually be pretty funny, so it was very easy to dismiss him being a total fuckhead as him just playing the part. I think this just emboldened him to show his true colours, which is when people realised that he isn’t just some lovable idiot who is just joking around, he actually is the insufferable wanker that he was projecting this entire time

It has been out in the open too. I was listening to Karl describe a meeting with Ricky on either XFM or one of the Ricky Gervais podcasts recently. Ricky wrestled him to the ground while Karl tried to play dead so he’d leave him alone, but it didn’t work, and Ricky just lay on top of him. It was still funny the way Karl tells it, because he’s got a gift for comedy, but it’s not exactly normal behaviour between colleagues (or adults even if they are friends, regardless of what Ricky says about it just being bants with mates). What was telling was that Karl ended up thinking about quitting after that while he was walking home, because he didn’t want to have to put up with that shit, and it was his girlfriend that Susanne convinced him to keep going because they needed a new kitchen.

I tried to watch his new special and was so fucking disappointed that he’s parroting the lame ass idea that comedians should be able to say whatever they want without consequences because they’re the last true artists of free speech. So fucking boring to adopt the weakest take and act like he’s so brave for going against “woke”. He’s not a champion of free speech and that new special is boring as shit.

You can tell he doesn’t agree with his own nonsense because he gleefully says “r-tard” and “sp-stic” in a routine about censorship, yet then self censors a few seconds later by saying “the N word”.

Unfortunately, disabled people are usually seen as the easiest punching bags.

Using your Netflix special to complain about free speech is a level of irony I don’t think Ricky gervais is capable of comprehending any more

You can’t say what you want these days, except when Netflix pay you $20m to say whatever you want on the biggest streaming service on the planet.

The fucking arrogance of speaking on behalf of “working people” at the end to tell them they can laugh at slurs because it’s basically all they have to look forward to in life. I was shocked people cheered.

A trend I’ve noticed is that the comedy figures who “used to actually be funny” before betraying their fanbase by coming out as bigots were always AT LEAST misogynistic. Bill Burr and Dave Chapelle come to mind. Their fans just didn’t notice because it’s so normalized, or apologized for it, swept it under the rug, argued it was just an ironic facet of their persona, or dismissed it as “just a joke”.

See I disliked both Bill and Dave because of exactly that. Ricky defended gay people, attacked religious bigotry, spoke fondly of his wife… But maybe I should have been more offended by his mockery of overweight people. I wouldn’t find it funny now.

This is why I’ll stick with Steve Hofstetter and Christopher Titus. They’ve been rock solid for decades in their beliefs and sets.

I’ve watched many of his stand up specials over the years. Even in my dumb, edgelord teen phase, Ricky Gervais’ standup was never good. People are right to say that the only people making him funny are his co-writers, because his stand up has always been awful.

20 years ago we were still angry about 9/11 but thinking Victory Accomplished. Christians were marching on the streets opposing the “evils” of gay marriage. Facebook was limited to a college email address, smart phones were still science fiction, and blackberries were new tech. In 2005 the novelty of WiFi hasn’t worn off yet. Donald Trump was a weirdo from Home Alone 2, and nobody got this new Colbert guy…. 20 years ago was a very different world.
