The topic of “lego pokemon” is currently trending due to the recent unveiling of the first-ever LEGO Pokémon sets by The LEGO Group. This announcement has garnered significant attention, leading to a surge in search interest, with over 50,000 searches recorded. The novelty of combining two beloved franchises—LEGO and Pokémon—has sparked excitement and curiosity among fans and collectors alike.

The news has been widely covered, with sources like SlashFilm detailing the types of Pokémon that are included in the initial sets, which feature popular character designs and build options. This immediate release of content aligns with the current popularity of both brands, further encouraging fans to explore what these new sets entail.

Furthermore, the official Pokémon website has also shared updates regarding these sets along with the introduction of a Trainer Challenge, motivating fans to engage more deeply with the new offerings. That is just tragic how the badges are a preorder bonus…
T

Right? Same with the pokecenter. The 2 sets I care about most are locked behind purchasing other things 😭

Yeah, actually. The price of branded Lego sets has always kinda kept me at bay (plus I still have the giant tub of assorted pieces from my childhood). I wasn’t gonna get the starters, but that set with the badges looked like a nice display piece.

These also look like shit
T

They don’t look any better than the mega blocks designs
S

The MBs looked better in every way, really.

I think the Eevee looks quite good. Pikachu looks like he’s got some sort of cranial deformity and the starters just look… bad.

Pikachu reminds me of the Slitheen from Doctor Who. https://preview.redd.it/fxrxgo2pazcg1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7618d2e05a5207ad555525ae208a352a2d23a220 Something about the way the face hangs…

Yeah that’s not an accident. The bonus/reward sets are often really well made to incentivize you to buy more sets so you can get them. Last time I went to the Lego store I got a whole extra set to raise my purchase to get the Disney TV set.
M
madonna-boy • 9 points
and the only two sets that would actually be affordable… you know, for like a child’s birthday present. yeah. lego hasn’t been for kids in a long time.
S
StuMx • 5 points
Thats how I end up getting a bootleg one from aliexpress instead.
K

Sadly the only one I wanted out of them all
G

And not a printed piece among them either.
W

Those prices are ridiculous! Like WTF!
H
Hitman3256 • 268 points
Licensed Lego prices, been that way for years
P
Possibly_English_Guy • 45 points
Lego has leaned HARD into catering to the markets of nostalgic millennials with disposable income and rich kids for the past at least 10 years.
F
Ferahgost • 11 points
Which I get, I’ve certainly bought plenty of those sets. However, might be time for them to take a peak at the market at what peoples wallets can actually afford . I should be the prime consumer and there’s not a fucking shot at those prices
I
Immortal_Enkidu • 73 points
Fortnight was much cheaper and at least star wars had a set in every price range. This is just stupid.
T
ThanosIsDoomfist • 49 points
Theres going to be more sets lol Notice how none of these are playsets, there will 100% be more this year, if not within the next couple months
S
SillyMattFace • 58 points
If there will be playsets for actual children, why not have one of those in the first range to pique interest? It feels like a misstep not to include anything at a cheaper range in the launch lineup.
H
Hitman3256 • 100 points
Kids aren’t buying them. This is prime Genwunner collector bait.
S
SillyMattFace • 40 points
Kids aren’t buying *these*, no. And speaking as a genwunner myself, I’m not buying them either. The idea of spending this much on them actually makes me feel a bit ill. But some small sets in the sub-$30 price range would do very nicely. I know my own kids would love some affordable Pokemon Lego, and I’d be happy to buy them.
H
Hitman3256 • 15 points
At their pricing that would be the piece count of that pokemon center or less. Which there isn’t a lot of. I could see them maybe making some Brickheadz or something, smaller display pieces.
L
Lambsauce914 • 12 points
Rumor (or I should say actual leak) is that those will be smart brick build. Something similar to like Lego Mario did. However I do agree that the current Lego Pokémon collab feels lacking, something that was nice with the Mega contrux Pokemon build was that they always featured a wild range of Pokémon with a very affordable price. It really doesn’t feel like Lego is scratching that itch yet, as not everyone is going to enjoy smart brick build, nor affording a super expensive collection set.
S
SillyMattFace • 8 points
Ugh, if they’re focusing on the smart brick route for Pokemon, I doubt there will be any affordable sets for kids at all then. Judging by the Star Wars reveal so far, smart inclusion adds about 30-50% to the price versus the piece count of a normal set. So pretty difficult to do something decent in that sweetspot sub-£30 kids’ gift pricing.
T
ThanosIsDoomfist • 5 points
There might be more tbh, but I agree, to not have cheaper stuff might be a misstep. Alternatively, it might not be either for them as a company. These sets were revealed basically as soon as they went up for pre-order, I personally sat in a que that was decently long, ended up getting none of em (cause the prices *are* ridiculous). However, it does kindve make sense for them to go either: 1. “Heres our most premium sets from this line, enjoy” and then their next wave is the more kid-friendly playset stuff maybe in early Spring. Its all Lego, but it really is 2 different kinds of folks/buyers. Or 2. “Heres our most premium sets from this collab” because they might want people to spend their money on these first because theyre the biggest bait for whales before they go broke and cant justify spending another $200, $680, etc after they bought what would be a bunch of significantly cheaper playsets. Thats kinda how I see it. Given how premium Lego and Pokemon are as brands, it never really seemed like we as consumers were ever set up to win, but I guarantee there will be playsets at some point this year.
S
SillyMattFace • 4 points
Your last point is very true. I started getting Star Wars Lego a few years back, but the prices have rapidly inflated even in the last couple of years, and it’s killed most of my interest. Same for my kids, stuff that used to be a little treat now doesn’t feel worth it. Lego has clearly decided they’d rather hook whales with huge disposable incomes or little value for money. It’s going to make them a fat stack of cash, but it feels depressing from a company that is supposed to be about play and imagination.
T
Triangulum_Copper • 5 points
Exactly. This should be a line for the core audience not another nostalgia bait
T
The_Eggo55 • 8 points
you have to get the parents on board first, obviously
P
pioneeringsystems • 23 points
You don’t get parents on board with a 650 quid set!
S
SillyMattFace • 15 points
I’m a parent, and I couldn’t be less on board with these prices. Affordable playsets sets for children and insanely priced collector sets for affluent adults are also not the necessarily same market. It doesn’t even have the synergy of something like Lego Star Wars where differently priced sets are scaled and work together.
Y
YamiPhoenix11 • 40 points
Scalpers “Prices are ridiculous so far!”
T
thejawa • 15 points
They seem like it, but honestly if you look at LEGO price across inflation they’re pretty consistent on a per-brick basis.
T
Triangulum_Copper • 13 points
It’s not that they’re too expensive per bricks, is that there is only huge sets.
G
GutherGlazer • 12 points
I can’t see the piece count on the starters, but for the pikachu and the eevee those seem fine? The badges being locked behind an expensive preorder sucks massively though.
I
Immortal_Enkidu • 7 points
6838 pieces for the starter set
G
GutherGlazer • 16 points
650 for a 6800+ licensed set doesn’t seem to bad to me. Especially compared to how they price out stuff like Star Wars.
S
sciencesold • 9 points
Avengers Tower is like 5200 for $500 so it definitely tracks for a large set being $100 per 1000 pieces. Pikachu as well as it’s just over 2000 and $200
P
Physical-Secret186 • 18 points
They’re actually very normal, a Lego prices one lego 10 cent
N
NoNefariousness2144 • 109 points
Pretty disgusting they could have made Pikachu $70 or $80 judging by Eevee’s price, but they just had to include a black stand and a Pokeball to make it $200…
T
Toutounet6 • 18 points
I always calculate that 100 pieces in a set = 10€ The pikachu is being +- 2000 pc seems fair for me
D
DefendedPlains • 29 points
But the point is they could have made Pikachu standalone the way they did Eevee, and it would have made it significantly cheaper. And he probably would have been more articulate too.
T
ThatGuyYouMightNo • 32 points
My issue isn’t necessarily the price, it’s the fact that Lego seems to think that Adult fans only want to buy big highly detailed sets and nothing else. And they pack the smaller sets with play features and weird extra builds because they’re meant for children. Like, I could probably save up the money for the $900 CAD starter set given enough time. But I have nowhere to display such an absolutely massive model. If they released each of those starters individually for the same price as the Eevee, or the badges and Pokemon Center as actual standalone sets and not limited time extra purchase stuff, I would buy some of those in a heartbeat.
