Buddy of mine went to a family picnic with his girlfriend and they discovered they were related. Not closely but not far enough lol . We still laugh about it 35ish years later

I had never met my dad or knew anything about him. My mom wouldn’t tell me much about their relationship or if it was a one night stand or anything. I knew his name and his job and that was it. I’m not even sure when they met because we moved states when I was 2 and she moved either right before or right after she got pregnant. Then I joined the military and got stationed a state away from her, stayed there after I separated. One year my middle child decided he wanted to do soccer. I signed him up for the same club my oldest played in. Coach had the same last name as my dad. I asked him if he was related and he told me “yeah that’s my dad, how do you know him”. And I immediately panicked inside, but told him that was my dad too. It was a really strange way to meet the other half of my family. And considering my middle hated soccer 2 weeks in and never wanted to do it again, the timing never would have happened otherwise.

My wife’s maternal grandmother remarried about a year before we met. We found out about a year into our marriage that the guy she married was my first cousin once removed by marriage or whatever verbiage for the husband of “my mother’s first cousin” or “my grandparent’s sibling’s granddaughter.” Or he had been because she was killed in a car wreck before they had kids and he moved out of state and basically vanished. This guy has no biological connection to either of us and his two year marriage into my family ended before I was born so I didn’t even know of him, yet holy shit the “You need to divorce! How dare you have a child after finding this out!” my wife and I got, and sometimes still get 20 years later, is bizarre, and occasionally wildly vitriolic. Like, come on people, if you go back to Mitochondrial Eve, then everybody’s related and nobody should be having children using your logic of “avoiding the barest relationship.”
