Nice list. For the next version, maybe include how to bring pets.

Yes and how to move your belongings? Customs can be a problem in Spain.

I’m an insurance broker and wouldn’t put my name behind SafetyWing for expat insurance. It’s what people with nothing to protect take.

I know next to nothing about Insurance. Would you like to write something that might be of use to Expats?

Certainly, can PM you some content or just post here

Do you have a rundown on what you recommend for US expats? About to leave the US for the next couple years, but was planning on paying for COBRA and then getting an international plan that includes medical evac/transport to the US.

Add NV to the Tax Residency tip. Suggested item: Voting abroad – methods allowed, ease, etc.

Sorry, new here. What are your budget numbers in section 7? Monthly cost of living?

On your first point, you are not legally required to file taxes if your gross income falls below the standard deduction for your filing category (ie earned income of $15,750 for a single filer under 65 in 2025). Now whether it’s financially advantageous to do so is a different question, but it’s not mandatory for all individuals as your first point indicates. Many Americans abroad (such as students) fall in this category.

I am a little bit reluctant to go too much into details about what is legally required or not as that really falls outside of my competency. Even if it is true today, it might not be true next year and this might not be constantly updated. I am thinking about removing numbers altogetherr for this reaon.

Yeah totally get that. I think it would be more helpful to just link to the IRS ‘check if you need to file’ [page](https://www.irs.gov/individuals/check-if-you-need-to-file-a-tax-return#:~:text=Who%20must%20file,Dependents) as that will let each person check their own situation. I just wanted to call it out as your first point makes it sound definitive that every single citizen has to file regardless of their circumstance, which isn’t necessarily true!

Did I miss someone on the text of the remittance fee, it says wise is “generally….” Was it going to say exempt ?

This is great, thank you ! The one thing that I see conflicting info on sometimes is working on a tourist visa. I know that you can’t work for local companies, but does this also apply if you are working for a company remotely outside of the country you are currently visiting? I often see people say that as long as you don’t stay long enough to become a tax resident its okay, but then I also read you just aren’t allowed to do it at all

It’s all about risk appetite. If you get caught, you could be in trouble. Don’t get caught 🙂

You need to check into the rules of the country, but generally no working at all, period. The US, for example, takes a hard line on people visiting for vacation, but logging in to do a little work. Other countries can do the same. A year ago, New Zealand made a big change to allow visitors to legally do remote work: [https://kpmg.com/xx/en/our-insights/gms-flash-alert/flash-alert-2025-031.html](https://kpmg.com/xx/en/our-insights/gms-flash-alert/flash-alert-2025-031.html) I’m under the impression that most countries haven’t made similar changes

Makes sense. I have done it quite a bit in a few countries in latin america and while I don’t think its technically allowed, they don’t seem to enforce it very strongly

Great list. In the “what to do with your US Home” section. Note that there’s no capital gains exclusion after you’ve rented it out for three years (need to have been resident for “two of the last five”). And your new country may view any gains as theirs to tax. Also- your credit card advice about local currency is solid, but the list of US cards that don’t attract a stepped up currency charge is long. It is more the exception when a US card does charge a 1-2-3% fx charge.

Pretty good start, well done. Some suggestions: section 1), taxes. The remittance tax OBBBA seems like it’s in flux, but is primarily for western union type services. According to this, it doesn’t impact wire transfers from banks or brokerages: [https://www.taxnotes.com/featured-analysis/remittance-tax-arrival-raises-questions-and-action-plans/2026/01/15/7tw2k#:\~:text=and%20tax%20credit.-,The%20Enacted%20Tax,-Perhaps%20in%20response](https://www.taxnotes.com/featured-analysis/remittance-tax-arrival-raises-questions-and-action-plans/2026/01/15/7tw2k#:~:text=and%20tax%20credit.-,The%20Enacted%20Tax,-Perhaps%20in%20response) section 1), taxes. Should mention that, in addition to US taxes, you’ll likely owe and need to file taxes with the local country section 1), taxes. Recommend cross-linking to these boglehead wiki articles: [https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Category:US\_expat](https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Category:US_expat) (especially the tax as an expat, tax pitfalls as an expat, and PFIC pages) sections 2) and 3): \* tourist expats: no legal right to work locally \* tourist visa “no work rights” For both of these, clarify that no working usually means even remote work for a US job. cross-refernce to see instead, “digital nomad” visa “timelines 1-6 months common” –> change to 6+ months section 4) include [sdfcu.org](http://sdfcu.org) section 4) note that schwab has a supported countries list, so it really depends on which country you go to. This list has been known to change, so there’s always the risk of getting your account closed section 11) perhaps cross-reference this post w/ a crowd-sourced list of google voice support: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Googlevoice/comments/1c571kw/crowdsourced\_list\_of\_google\_voices\_2fa/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Googlevoice/comments/1c571kw/crowdsourced_list_of_google_voices_2fa/) section 14) mention employers of record such as deel: [https://www.remofirst.com/post/deel-vs-remote](https://www.remofirst.com/post/deel-vs-remote) Other: \* mention voting and [fvap.gov](http://fvap.gov) \* mention that men between the ages of 18 and 25 need to register for the draft w/ [sss.gov](http://sss.gov) (comes up often with accidental americans. actually, that might warrant mentioning the SFOP for catching up on tax returns: https://1040abroad.com/blog/streamlined-filing-compliance-procedures/)

Other visa type: student In regards to 9, you might add states with no income tax, with special mention to SD, in which you can qualify for residency with proof of one night’s hotel stay
