Genuine question, does this practice not deter potential consumers enough that they lose out on business? I know for me, if a business doesn’t list their price, then I move on
T
TutorNo8896 • 5,083 points
Yeah, i dont feel like haggling or finding an employee or using some sketchy app, the impulse to buy disapears pretty quick, especially for some consumer plastic.

Not even if we … enter you into a drawing for $10 store credit??

And this is the reason local stores / markets loose sales to amazon and other online stores lol
T
TbonerT • 19 points
Even if I don’t agree to marketing emails when they ask, they often forget after a while and still spam me.
W
weedisfortherich • 350 points
LOSE. It is spelled lose. They lose sales.
E
eggyrulz • 212 points
No I like his better, the sales are loose, as in they are little whores and Amazon, with their good Christian ^sweatshop morals is winning out because *their* sales dont sleep around
E
Eray_Skirata • 102 points
I hate this, but I also am entertained by this lol

Welcome to current year, a morbidly entertaining hell.

I like to think that they have set the sales loose. Like they’re running around, wild and free. If you see one, you’re lucky.

They want you to bring it to the register, then make you feel like a turd when it gets rung up & you have to look at your kid, saying I can’t afford this. Sorry..😔
B
backwoodsbatman • 8 points
Exactly this. It’s to make you feel pressured to buy it.
C
ChanglingBlake • 43 points
That’s when you unleash your inner Karen. “Look what you did to my son/daughter! They were looking forward to this item and *your* store’s incompetence to do a fundamental part of running a store is the reason they got their hopes up.” I know it’s not the wage slave’s fault, and often the “manager” is just as helpless, but the company will just keep enshitifying everything if we don’t raise a stink.
O
oopsdiditwrong • 15 points
I’m not bothering that cashier about it unless they have an attitude. Most likely I’d find it online using their WiFi before I got to the register. If my kids were there they wouldn’t think twice. If I have to buy it online from someone else while at your register, I’m just not going back. Maybe mention it online like OP.

💯 It’s a sales tactics

The new trend that pisses me off is the one where the sales in their weekly ads are all coupons that are only accessible by app. I spent 30 minutes trying to download it and find the coupons once and it still didn’t work, and that’s when I said “F this” (not those actual words; I was a bit more kind), told the cashier to cancel my order and left the items with them at the register as I walked away.
T
TutorNo8896 • 56 points
Yeah I hate it. It was annoying enough to have a “loyalty card” but its just too far for me.
H
hbHPBbjvFK9w5D • 42 points
I stopped shopping at the “Whole Paycheck” supermarket a couple of years ago. They refused to allow me to ring up at self-serve, see any coupons or discounts, or get a code to use the toilet unless I downloaded their app. F-k it, no way am I giving every detail of my life away for the “privilege” of using their overpriced supermarket.
S
SeaSaltSequence • 22 points
The fact that they think consumer desire is stronger than the ability to second-guess an impulse purchase is crazy. Whoever thought up this dynamic pricing bs must be so out of touch reality. I doubt they know how much food $20 can buy at the grocery store
D
DrunkOnEspresso • 38 points
Same. Most of the time I just walk away, but on the rare occasion I don’t, I ask for so many prices that the employee is usually pissed off
N
Noisebug • 602 points
Yes. No price means it’s too expensive for me.
D
dantheother • 133 points
“if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” kinda situation for me too
J
JakobiGaming • 127 points
Exactly, there’s gotta be a reason they don’t wanna tell me
T
Technical_Shake_9573 • 31 points
That’s why i will never go for an unpriced product because i may have to declined after being told the price and being seen as a poor/cheap person.
M
MargaritasAndBeaches • 10 points
I worked as a cashier for several years and I never cared or judged someone for not buying an item after checking the price.
S
SpeedoTANx • 13 points
Although if one asks the price of everything over the course of a visit, maybe they will get annoyed enough to price-tag items. 🤣. I would have no shame at all in asking:)

If ya can’t afford a new Ferrari, ya can’t afford a Ferrari. I totally agree with you, by the way. I just wanted to say that.
A
AggravatingFlow1178 • 233 points
Not listing the price is automatic “Oh so if I looked it up, I would see it’s 80% cheaper online”.
I
ItsCalledDayTwa • 70 points
I’m willing to spend a little more in a shop as well, but not listing at all is just unacceptable. I will happily support my local Businesses and do not need to order everything online.
L
laplongejr • 18 points
> I will happily support my local Businesses Until they do it as well. I’m European and stopped supporting my local businesses when I noticed they gave the worse customer service even compared to Amazon.
J
JPKlaus • 343 points
The answer is yes. Any barrier between product and purchase within FMCG will decline sales. It’s proven especially in this day and age where people are even less likely to ask for help and stores tend to have less people working and walking the floor to save on costs. Tell that my company that is convinced that it improves sales when nothing has prices and not even the current sales and offers are declared because “customer engagement” would bring in more sales then if the customers could just see it on a sign. Its so dumb
J
JPKlaus • 121 points
Some people can’t be told. There’s been times where I’ll sit in a room with buyers from the biggest supermarkets in the country and show them answers in black and white, pure data driven with no personal opinion and if it isn’t what they fancy doing they won’t do it. Then they call to say sales are down and how to fix it. It’s infuriating.
B
BikePuzzled1165 • 75 points
I think instead of sitting in a board room with charts and data, the ceos and execs who make these decisions need to dress down and go do those random social-media-style street surveys where they walk up to random people and ask them questions like “if you walked into a store and didn’t see a price on anything, what woukd you do?” These people are so out of touch with reality and the average consumer because we’ve all been reduced to impersonal data.
J
JPKlaus • 61 points
The problem always is weight of opinion vs weight of position. You could have a great buyer, knows their stuff, has the right ideas BUT Director/head of etc wants focus on something else. So the right ideas are always curtailed by weight of position, whose opinion is swayed by someone above them. And is always in my 12 years experience a reward now fix later system. Prices are so high because profit use to be key but now it is more profit this year than last. Next year needs to be more. £100m has to be £105m then £115m. No one can see the wood through the trees

I currently work retail. I’m a cashier/self-check monitor. My favorite phrase for exactly what you’re describing is “the ‘they’ who is in charge doesn’t listen to the ‘us’ that does the job”. We can file feedback all day long about what the customers complain about or ask about, and management says “we’ll look into it” and nothing ever changes. If I didn’t need the extremely flexible schedule I am currently enjoying I would look elsewhere, but for now it is what it is.

Technically they’re correct. Their refusal to offer clear pricing greatly increased my customer engagement and purchases. …with the competing company down the street.

Here’s my engagement with your company: Me, at register: “Hey how much for these things?” Associate, ringing them all up: “This one is $19, these are $33, and all these are on sale 2 for 1 at $44.” Me: “Nah.” walks away, leaving all things to be reshelved.

Is the “customer engagement” supposed to be with an app? It’s supposed to be with an app, isn’t it?
X
Xnut0 • 32 points
It’s one thing to ask for the price of one or two products. But in this example I can picture myself standing by the shelf to find a suitable gift, and in order to do that I want to know the price of every available option so that I can choose based on price, quality, the childs preference, and what I would like to give as a gift. And I have a bad short time memory so someone would need to constantly read out the price on anything that I points toward for the entire time I’m standing there trying to decide what to buy, before I after 15 minutes decide to try another store instead.
C
Cranks_No_Start • 20 points
> less likely to ask for help and stores tend to have less people working When I find something I need is locked up I’ll press that button to wait. Unless I absolutely have to have right this minute. I’ll hold out, but if I don’t need it right this second I’m online to Amazon and if I can order it before the clerk shows up I’ll order it and walk away.

It does. When we started doing markets, pricing each item individually was not feasible. We started with a sign that listed the inventory for the day and the price. People didn’t always see it. It lowered sales. Now we group and put little price signs in that grouping. Each grouping has at least 3 price signs. Higher priced items are labeled individually, as well as one of our special lines, as their display does not make group pricing possible. Sales shot up the next month when things were clearly priced.

Crazy how people naturally respond to clear and direct communication.
A
Alycion • 20 points
We knew our cards weren’t the best pricing method. But honestly, we weren’t ready with our setup for the first. I’m amazed at how many still don’t mark their stuff clearly. I mean I run into the same vendors constantly. They have no sales, I have a 20 min wait to get into my tent. It was much longer before we went double.
T
TurnkeyLurker • 9 points
>I have a 20 min wait to get into my tent. So…you are saying your sales are *in-tense*?

They are getting ready for “Dynamic Pricing”.
