The topic “David Blough” is currently trending due to recent news surrounding his promotion to offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. As a former quarterback coach for the team, his new role marks a significant step in his coaching career, capturing the attention of NFL fans and analysts alike.

The surge in search interest can be attributed to the Commanders’ decision, as this change in coaching staff is a pivotal moment for the team, particularly in light of their challenges on offense. With Blough stepping into this prominent position, many are curious about how his strategies will influence the team’s performance moving forward.

News articles from various outlets, including NFLTradeRumors.co and Yahoo News New Zealand, have confirmed his appointment and provided details regarding the circumstances of his promotion. This coverage has likely fueled an increase in searches from those wanting to learn more about Blough’s coaching philosophy and what it might mean for the Commanders’ upcoming season.

As the NFL community processes this development, the heightened search volume reflects a keen interest in coaching changes and their potential impact on team dynamics and game performance.

Assistant QB coach to OC is quite the jump
G

He was the acting QB coach after Tavita Pritchard was hired as Stanford’s HC in November

Funny, visiting my parents yesterday and they had given me a box of old photo albums/scrapbooks from my childhood. On top of that pile was one of my team photos from 1996. Tavita was our quarterback. Funny to see this during my daily perusing.

Two months as interim QB coach to OC is quite the jump.

Just to hijack the top comment, all the local guys say the people in the building talk about this guy like people talked about early Sean McVay, basically the first time you talk to him you know he’s gonna be a HC/OC. They probably didn’t want to risk him leaving for Detroit and not getting McDaniel.

Sean McVay was only ever a tight ends/WR coach before he jumped to OC. What’s wrong with taking a swing on someone?
K
KickerRevolution • 32 points
McVay’s talked about how he was helping draw up plays for his OC (Kyle Shanahan) each week as an assistant with the Commanders. That experience was paramount. most of his assistants that have jumped to HC (w/o being OC) were the guys helping draw up his plays each week.

He came up with some plays for the Lions while he was still a player.

I remember seeing him on the Lions season of Hard Knocks and he seemed like a really good guy. Easy to root for.

David Blough is one of the nicest guys around from everything we’ve seen and heard. Should be great from a culture standpoint

> Sean McVay I saw this pointed out online, and it actually made sense. McVay was also promoted with an offensive HC to help guide him along. Blough is being promoted, with a staggering lack of experience and a defense first HC to lean on. He’s now the top offensive guy in Washingotn, where Sean still had Jay to hold his hand and while I know Jay is kinda forgotten about, but the dude was just behind the Kyle and McVay tier as far as offensive play callers were concerned.

McVay had also been coaching for a decade when he became OC

AKA DQ doesn’t wanna miss on Matt LaFleur again
M
MadManMax55 • 25 points
I’m convinced that even if Quinn officially offered LaFleur the job he would have still gone to LA. He would have been OC either way, so he wasn’t turning down a promotion. Plus he was more loyal to Shannahan than the Falcons. Spending a year or two more learning under Shannahan was a safer career move than being the sole guy responsible for taking over a historically great offense. Quinn not even making the offer was clearly a mistake though.

I think it’s refreshing that in the NFL talented people don’t always need to arbitrarily take every office on the Cursus Honorum on their way to the top job. Sometimes the slightly unorthodox hires work out really well (eg John Harbaugh coming from special teams). Sometimes a coach was blocked from rising to where they belonged (eg Dave Canales in Seattle). If this guy shows talent and impressed in the interview just take him and see.

Exactly, I’ll take giving an inexperienced up and comer a shot over some guy with name recognition getting his fifth run at it cause someone worked with him a decade ago.

Just wait until the Raiders hire Webb as HC

Is it? Assistant QB-> QB coach -> OC? That’s not that crazy
O
OmarLittle21 • 12 points
He was QB coach for like 6 games. He hasn’t even technically been a coach of any kind for 2 years. He was hired in February 2024. I think it’s a worthwhile risk but the drawbacks are clear.

imsuperflytnt • 2 points
Similar to Kellen Moore in a lot of ways. Out of the league in 2017 then went from QB coach to OC in 18/19 respectively. It’s risky but probably less so when the guy has been in the building for the past couple years.
T
Thejohnshirey • 2 points
Also, it’s a very different role even than the other really young OC hires recently like Udinski in Jacksonville and Doyle in Chicago where you have an offensive minded HC with all their own schemes who call their own plays. Obviously Quinn is a defensive guy, so Blough is going to be in charge of the full offense in Washington.

I saw someone else say that Blough rhymes with “plow” In that case, I assume the names would be transcribed in the IPA as /ʃʌk/ and /blaʊ/
P

It does indeed rhyme with plow if the multiple beat reporters and team insiders I’ve heard say his name this week are anything to go by

One of my favorite names. But, not as funny as when the Bears signed Blewitt to kick field goals.
