Why Is new food pyramid Trending Today?

The topic of the “new food pyramid” is currently trending due to a surge of interest following significant announcements from key figures and institutions related to dietary guidelines. Recently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. introduced a new version of the food pyramid that emphasizes the prioritization of meat, cheese, and vegetables at the top of the dietary hierarchy. This move generates curiosity about the implications of such recommendations on public health and nutrition.

In addition, the Trump administration released updated dietary guidelines encouraging the consumption of “real food,” a phrase that captures attention and can resonate with a wide audience increasingly concerned about food quality and health. This alignment of dietary guidelines with prominent figures like RFK Jr. creates a focal point for discussions and inquiries surrounding nutrition.

Furthermore, health experts’ reactions to these changes, particularly the endorsement from Andrew Huberman, a recognized figure in health and wellness, have sparked debates among professionals and the public alike. His backing lends authority to the new guidelines, prompting increased interest in the shifts these recommendations represent and how they contrast with previous dietary advice. The combination of these events has led to a substantial spike in search interest, as individuals seek to understand the implications of these updates on their lifestyles and dietary choices.

Give your wife a box of Cheez-Its. She’ll be happy.

Honestly, shelf- stable snacks might be the only thing safe in that house at this point

Yeah but for twinkies it’s like 10 years or something so hopefully even OP’s wife couldn’t mess that up. 🤣

We nailed an unwrapped Twinkie to a message board my first week in the dorms at university. At the end of the school year not only were there no signs of mold, there was zero change in texture or appearance. Still squishy, not even a slight crust. Not sure what’s in those but it isn’t food. This was the late 80s, I don’t imagine they’ve changed the formula in a positive direction since then.

There’s even a cute scene in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance where a guy that has a touch that rots things grabs a twinkie and it stays pristine lol

Back in the very early days of the internet , I remember a research paper that made the rounds, where a bunch of college students did scientific experiments on twinkies. They were burned, boiled , frozen, thrown off of a ten story building , driven over by a car, etc. It was an excellent report and very well written and the conclusion at the end said that it is obvious that Twinkies are not food. It was hysterical.

It was some students at UVA! I attempted to replicate it at home for a school project.

Sorbic acid, in the dough… makes mold say, no no no! Creamy filling is where it’s at! There were no cows involved with that!

I had a friend who did an alternate experiment. Early in the fall semester, got a 16 oz cup of Coke from the self-serve fountain drinks in the college cafeteria and let it set out on a shelf in his dorm, and the same day, opened a 16 oz bottle of Coke, poured into the same style cup as from the cafeteria, and set it about 6” away from the cafeteria Coke. The one from the cafeteria began going moldy within a week, maybe 2, but the Coke from the bottle just went flat. He eventually threw away the cafeteria Coke, but kept the bottled Coke to see how long it would be before it went moldy too. It never did. The school year ended, and all the bottle Coke did was go flat, it didn’t even attract ants or flies. Our hypothesis was the the fountain Coke had real sugar in it – this was in the early 80s – and the bottle Coke had HFCS. The only other possibility was that the bottled Coke had a lower pH, making it too acidic for the mold to grow.

There is a good chance the soda fountain had slime mold which caused the mold to grow in the fountain Coke. I can’t tell you how many health department reports I’ve read where restaurants got marked down on health inspections due to slime mold in ice machines and soda fountains.
B
bakedincanada • 7 points
Soda fountains are covered in bacteria and moulds, the soda picked up bacteria on its way through the machine and that’s why it moulded. The one bottled in factory was untainted.

It’s one of the few foods where I’m like, look I know I sometimes treat my body like a sewage treatment facility in Jersey, but I KNOW I shouldn’t be eating twinkies.

She refused to listen to you, her husband, as you repeatedly tried to explain why her methods…while technically edible…weren’t good. It took her *parents* seeing it and saying something before she would even open her eyes. OP, she may be currently reacting out of embarrassment at her parents’ discovery (where did she learn these methods if not her upbringing?) but I hope she’ll finally listen. I imagine you prepare food for yourself sometimes. I’m not on the “If you don’t like her cooking, do it yourself” bandwagon as her actions affect food storage as well as prep. I once saw a talk show (think Dr. Phil or something similar) where they had an “expert” food person show just how far from the mold you had to cut a block of cheese before it was safe to eat. They did the same with other foods, even meat. I am on board with not wanting to waste food but I hope I never get to that point. I *hate* wasting anything, especially food. I will squeeze the absolute bejeezus out of the Fixodent tube before opening a new one. Good luck, OP. NTAH

I part of the problem is OP isn’t home all the time if he’s away at work where he has to fly in. So he can’t properly rotate the food as he said and his wife is creating these situations. I think NTA, had to be done.

I’m the one that will say some food is “good enough” between my wife and I, but I also only expect me to use it and not her. Something like maybe some meat is starting to go off and she doesnt feel comfortable using it, if I think its still ok I’ll cook it up for me to take for lunch the next day. OPs wife takes it further than I would.

So long as you understand that cooking only kills living bacteria, but does not remove or break down all the toxic byproducts which the bacteria have already created … (I’m the same way)

God, your comment is so…appropriate…to me. My aunt (80s) has never been a great cook, loves burnt toast and popcorn, etc. (One of the blandest things my wife and I ever had is when she served us barely seasoned ground turkey patties with a side of chutney. At least the chutney was spicy.) And she fucking loves Cheez-Its.
M
Main_Cauliflower5479 • 21 points
Hey now. I am by all accounts, a pretty darned good cook. And I do love good food, which is why I cook at home 90% of the time. But I do like my toast very dark, but not my popcorn. And I like Cheez-It, especially the extra toasty ones. I like my pizza crust well done, although before I moved to Albuquerque, I never received doughy gross pizzas before.

> I am by all accounts, a pretty darned good cook. And I do love good food, which is why I cook at home 90% of the time. 🤣 Same for me. Which is why my wife is horrified that one of my favorite (though these days rarely eaten) junk snacks is Easy Cheese and crackers. And to be fair, we almost always order our pizza well done, because we too like a firm, crispy crust.

Bottom line is if there’s nothing wrong with the food why would she be embarrassed? Pretty clear she was raised better, knows better and can’t be bothered to give a damn. NTA but maybe you should be. Start buying dinner for you on the way home and just cooking your own steak or whatever. If she doesn’t care she can eat that crap. If she complains about it ask her why it suddenly matters.
M
Main_Cauliflower5479 • 416 points
Totally agree. I was also going to suggest he buy \*good\* takeout for dinner for himself, and stop for fresh groceries if he wants to cook, his own dinner, for that meal only. She can eat the moldy cheese and freezer burned meats.
K
KiriKokoro • 19 points
Honestly, letting her live with the consequences while you take care of yourself might be the only message that actually lands.
M
My_Dramatic_Persona • 179 points
I don’t think that’s really a solution. OP is putting effort into buying and storing food, and she is damaging the food he stores. I know I don’t want to be making side trips to buy food on the way home from work every day, and especially not with that job schedule. Is there space for a separate freezer? Maybe a chest freezer in the garage or something? That way her regular use of the freezer for daily life won’t damage the food OP has stored carefully. Or she could just develop new food handling habits. It’s difficult to change the way you operate, but she really should.
C
ChocoChuckle • 27 points
If she’s not embarrassed serving it then she shouldn’t be shocked when you stop eating it and start matching her energy.
L
LowDudgeon • 48 points
Dude is working 72 hours a week and i guarantee he has a commute. He doesn’t have time to stop for groceries, he barely has time to shower at home.
C
crownandcoke24 • 1,308 points
This is an example of if she wanted to she would. She clearly knows normal food standards because she knew what her parents were talking about. What is she doing with all her time? I’m not all for gender roles but he is working a ton and she is not, so it’s not about her being the woman of the house. It’s that his partner is not prioritizing something he has communicated he cares about. We ask men to communicate with their partners all the time and OP did. She should step up. NTA.
